As evidenced in our recent data science management survey, collaboration is ranked the top capability contributing to success with data science. From hundreds of calls and emails in the field, we know that data science leaders “get” collaboration, but still struggle to put the pieces together. Collaboration is comprised of effective communication that draws from a diversity of perspectives, opinions and experiences to solve a problem. I’d like to highlight one word from that last sentence, as it is both overlooked and critical to data science industry success: diversity.
“Diversity” is rich with meaning and personal importance to me and many of my colleagues. When I first joined Domino last summer, diversity was most clearly mapped by our hiring policy, but most frequently mentioned in passing conversation. As we grew rapidly, adding people of unique backgrounds and experience, the topic of diversity began to appear with increasing frequency, visibility and variety: a recurring women’s lunch, Domino diversity speaker series, diversity recruiting power hours, and lunchtime screenings of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
The Domino Diversity and Inclusion Club grew organically. Since January, the Club has been our formalized commitment to promote the values of diversity and inclusion throughout Domino. Whether it’s through recruitment, retention, career progression or training and development, our members are committed to providing inclusive environments where individuals are valued for their talents and empowered to reach their fullest potential. This is a mutually beneficial contribution to Domino and the data science industry, as McKinsey has found that “companies in the top quartile for gender or racial and ethnic diversity are more likely to have financial returns above their national industry medians” and the Center for Talent Innovation finds lack of diversity means “fewer promising ideas make it to market.”

In this spirit, Domino’s Diversity and Inclusion Club is thrilled to offer travel grants for Domino’s upcoming Rev Data Science Leaders Summit (May 30-31 in San Francisco). Rev brings together data science leaders across industries and companies who believe data science is a key business differentiator and C-suite concern. We believe it is critical that diversity is represented, networked and experienced at Rev, where the data science leaders of today and tomorrow will share skills, knowledge and ideas to bring data science from hype to reality. We aim to remove barriers for diversity to enter into the professional world of data science. Our ongoing support of Rev is a demonstration of our commitment.
Apply for the Rev Diversity Travel Grant for 2018. Please contact Grace with questions about the program.
