Data science teams often face inefficiencies that hinder AI innovation: repetitive project setups, inconsistent practices, subpar documentation, and limited resource control. These challenges waste time, fragment workflows, and impede progress. To address these issues, Domino introduces Project Templates — a feature designed to standardize and accelerate data science work. Teams can quickly create comprehensive templates that bundle code, datasets, compute environments, and configurations in just a few clicks. This makes it simple to jumpstart new projects by effortlessly creating them from these templates.

This blog will guide you through creating, sharing, and leveraging these Project Templates tailored to your organization’s needs. You’ll also discover how best practices can be enforced by implementing official, organization-wide templates, ensuring consistent workflows, better resource management, and accelerated project delivery.

Unlocking data science productivity: Overcoming key challenges

Data science teams are under pressure to deliver value quickly. However, they often encounter significant productivity challenges such as the following:

  • Repetitive project setup: Time spent recreating structures and environments leads to consistent starting points.
  • Workflow inconsistencies: Varying approaches among team members reduce collaboration and code reusability.
  • Resource management hurdles: Limited visibility over resources complicates cost optimization and compliance.
  • Knowledge transfer bottlenecks: Due to siloed knowledge, new team members need help with onboarding.
  • Scalability constraints: As teams grow, maintaining quality becomes increasingly difficult without standardization.

Reusable project templates can significantly increase productivity by reducing setup time and improving collaboration, allowing data scientists to focus on high-value analytical work rather than repetitive tasks.

Boost data science teams: Domino's Project Templates

Domino's Project Templates provide a streamlined approach to project setup:

  • Accelerated project initiation: Jumpstart projects using pre-built methods and bundled components.
  • Enhanced collaboration: Easily share best practices across the organization.
  • Standardization and governance: Implement and enforce internal best practices consistently.

How to use Project Templates

Here’s a step-by-step guide on leveraging Domino's Project Templates.

Creating a Project Template

On the main project page, locate "Create Template" in the top right corner.

Intro to Domino

Assign a unique name to the template. Set access permissions to share with specific people or with organizations, or keep it private to yourself.*

Add a description and tags for easy discovery. Only admin and librarian roles can mark the template as official.

Choose which components to include (code, data, environments).

Create project template GIT

Save the template in a new or existing GIT repository.

*Only admin and librarian roles can mark the template as official.

Start a project using a template

Begin with a list of available templates on the Projects page, where a name or a tag can find the template.

Navigate to the template that you would like to base your new project on, and click “Create Project.”

Follow the standard project creation process, where the project will be created with all the components included in the selected template (code, data, environments, etc.)

Editing template details

While generally immutable, a few details about the template can be modified, including name, tags, and access level. Select the template from the list of templates, and click “Edit details.”

Utilizing templates involves not only leveraging new software features but also transforming existing processes. This is why Domino includes roles like admin or librarian, which can officially designate a template as approved for use within your organization. In contrast with a template shared by a colleague, an official template indicates that it has been thoroughly reviewed for quality, best practices, and compliance, making it a trustworthy resource for AI projects.

Domino's Project Templates empower data science teams to work smarter and faster while fostering collaboration and innovation. By incorporating best practices, these templates promote consistency and collaboration, making it easier for teams to share insights and results. They also encourage innovation, as teams have more time to experiment and customize templates to meet specific project needs, ultimately facilitating knowledge sharing and scalability across the organization.
